Mother, Not Other is a project seeking to extend and address the limited visual space and form attributed to maternal physical inheritance. Specifically, mother and children who are not immediately associated as belonging together through their physical attributes.
Mothers and children who have different coloured skin or features. Mothers who have adopted or are not the genetic parent. Mothers with children who are disabled. Mothers whose reality remains absent from the canon of mothering imagery.
A personally resonant absence, I hope through this work a richer, more diverse and tacit language may be sown. Translating from the visual to positively impacting the lives and greater understand and acceptance of everyday life for the subjects represented.
