CASTING CALL
Mother, Not Other is a personal exploration seeking to extend and address the narrow visual language connected to maternal physical inheritance.
Specifically, mothers and their children who don’t share immediate or obvious physical attributes.
Mothers who have different coloured skin or features. Mothers who have adopted or are not the genetic parent. Mothers with children who are disabled. Mothers whose reality remains absent from the canon of mothering imagery.
Throughout my life, as child and now as a mother, I have constantly heard that I look different to my mother, to my daughter. That my daughters don’t look the same. That one looks like me and the other doesn’t. These curious and continuous comments, said over a life time are both fracturing and tiresome. I’m her MOTHER, not some OTHER!
They are also evidence of the lack of diversity in the imagery we are exposed to, the ways in which we view and therefore comprehend what a mother and child should look like.
A deeply personal absence, I hope through this work a richer, more reflexive and tacit language and understanding may take root, transfiguring imagery to positively impact the lives of those represented by this project.
This is an exploration rooted in joy and celebration as much as resistance and education.
I am looking for mothers and their children to be photographed and share their story.
